What TOEFL preparation actually needs to do
The TOEFL iBT is an academic-English test used for university admission, especially in the US, scored 0–120 across four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing — each worth 0–30. Since the July 2023 update the whole test runs under two hours, and it’s taken entirely on a computer, including a Speaking section you record into a microphone.
Good TOEFL prep is balanced and practical. Universities set their own cutoffs (often 80–100 total, sometimes with section minimums), so a single weak section can sink an otherwise strong score. The test’s signature integrated tasks — read, listen, then speak or write about how the sources connect — reward note-taking and synthesis you build by doing them repeatedly. Skoolskill is an AI tutor that turns your own practice and notes into daily 15–20 minute drills with feedback.
The four sections at a glance
| Section | Score | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 0–30 | Academic passages with comprehension and inference questions |
| Listening | 0–30 | Lectures and conversations; note-taking is allowed |
| Speaking | 0–30 | Independent + integrated tasks, recorded into a microphone |
| Writing | 0–30 | One integrated task (read + listen + write) + one writing-for-discussion task |
The four sum to a total of 0–120.
A section-by-section prep plan
| Phase | Focus | Daily target |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 | Diagnostic across all four; identify your weakest section | 15 min/day |
| Weeks 3–5 | Reading speed and Listening note-taking; build academic vocabulary | 15–20 min/day |
| Weeks 6–8 | Speaking templates and integrated Writing structure | 20 min/day |
| Final 2 weeks | Timed full sections; review feedback on Speaking and Writing | 20 min/day |
| Test week | Light review, one timed Speaking run, then rest | — |
Speaking and Writing are where most points are won or lost, because they require producing English under time pressure. Our English tutor reinforces grammar and vocabulary, and our essay feedback tool sharpens written responses.

Why note-taking is a TOEFL skill in itself
A detail many candidates miss: you can take notes on every section of the TOEFL, and the integrated tasks practically demand it. In integrated Writing you read a passage, then hear a lecture that usually challenges it, then write about how they relate — and the lecture plays only once. Strong note-taking that captures the lecture’s counterpoints opposite the reading’s points is often what separates a 24 from a 28 on Writing. The same goes for the integrated Speaking tasks, where a clean two-column note lets you respond in a structured 60 seconds. Skoolskill drills these source-to-response tasks so the synthesis becomes a habit, not a scramble.
When a human tutor still matters
- Speaking and pronunciation near test day — a human hears intonation and accent best.
- You’re stuck below your target and need a person to diagnose subtle Writing weaknesses.
- A learning difference that calls for tailored strategies.
- You want mock test-day timing practice with live feedback under pressure.
Many candidates pair a few human sessions with daily AI practice across all four sections.
