What IELTS preparation actually needs to do
IELTS is scored on a 0–9 band scale across four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — and your overall band is their average, rounded to the nearest half. Because requirements are often “6.5 overall with no section below 6.0,” a single weak section can sink an otherwise good result. So good IELTS prep is balanced: it lifts your weakest section while protecting your strongest.
It also has to match the version you’re sitting. Academic IELTS (university, professional registration) and General Training (migration, work) share Listening and Speaking but differ in Reading and Writing. Practising the wrong version wastes time.
The four sections at a glance
| Section | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | ~30 min | Same for Academic and General |
| Reading | 60 min | Academic uses academic texts; General uses everyday texts |
| Writing | 60 min, 2 tasks | Academic Task 1 = graph/chart; General Task 1 = letter; Task 2 = essay (both) |
| Speaking | 11–14 min | Face-to-face interview; same for both versions |
Each section gives a band 0–9; the overall is the rounded average.
A section-by-section prep plan
| Phase | Focus | Daily target |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 | Diagnostic across all four; identify your weakest section | 15 min/day |
| Weeks 3–6 | Drill the weakest section; build Reading speed and Listening note-taking | 15–20 min/day |
| Weeks 7–9 | Writing Task 1 & 2 structure; Speaking fluency on common topics | 20 min/day |
| Final 2 weeks | Timed full sections under test conditions; band-feedback review | 20 min/day |
| Test week | Light review, one timed Speaking run-through, then rest | — |
The half-band steps get harder near the top, so consistency over weeks matters most above band 6.5.
Where candidates lose marks
- Writing Task Response — not fully answering Task 2’s question, or describing the wrong trend in Task 1.
- Coherence and Cohesion — weak paragraphing and overused linking words.
- Speaking range — hesitation and a narrow vocabulary cap the band even with good grammar.
- Reading time management — the final passage and True/False/Not Given questions.
Skoolskill gives band-style feedback against the four official Writing criteria and uses spaced repetition to bring back the question types you missed.
