What KS2 SATs are

KS2 SATs are the national tests children sit at the very end of primary school, in Year 6, in mid-May. They’re set and marked nationally, reported as a scaled score (100 is the “expected standard”), and the results are passed on to secondary school — so they matter for setting and for first impressions.

There are three strands:

  • English Reading — one paper, a reading booklet plus questions, testing comprehension, retrieval and inference
  • English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (SPaG) — a grammar/punctuation paper plus a separate spelling test
  • Maths — an Arithmetic paper (Paper 1) and two Reasoning papers (Papers 2 and 3)

The method: short, daily, in the real paper style

KS2 SATs reward familiarity. Children who’ve seen the question styles dozens of times stay calm in May. Skoolskill’s AI SATs tutor:

  • runs a short diagnostic across reading, SPaG and maths to find weak spots
  • sets 15–20 minutes of practice a day in the genuine paper format
  • marks every answer instantly with a child-friendly explanation
  • automatically resurfaces topics your child finds hard
  • builds up to full timed papers as May approaches

When a human SATs tutor still helps

  • A child who lacks confidence and needs gentle one-to-one reassurance
  • A specific learning difficulty needing specialist support
  • Big gaps from missed schooling that need rebuilding from the ground up

Many families combine both: a tutor every week or two for confidence, Skoolskill daily for the actual reps.

Questions people ask

What are KS2 SATs and when are they sat?

KS2 SATs are the national curriculum tests at the end of primary school, sat in Year 6 in mid-May. They cover English reading, English grammar, punctuation and spelling (SPaG), and maths (arithmetic plus two reasoning papers). They're set and marked nationally, and the results follow your child to secondary school.

Which papers does Skoolskill cover?

All of the assessed ones: the Reading paper, the SPaG paper (with the separate spelling test), the Arithmetic paper, and Maths Reasoning Papers 2 and 3. Each is practised in the real format, with the same question styles your child will meet in May.

Is 20 minutes a day enough for a 10 or 11-year-old?

Yes — it's the sweet spot. Children this age learn far better in short, regular bursts than in long sessions. Twenty focused minutes a day across the year builds both the skills and the exam stamina without overwhelming them.

When should we start?

Many families begin a gentle routine in the autumn term of Year 6, ramping up after Christmas and doing full timed papers from Easter. Starting early keeps it calm; Skoolskill builds a plan that counts backward from the May test week.

Does it explain wrong answers?

Yes. Every question comes with a child-friendly worked explanation, and the AI tracks which topics your child finds hard — fractions, inference questions, comma rules — and brings more of those back until they're secure.

How is this better than a weekly SATs tutor?

A weekly hour with a £25–£40 tutor gives roughly 30–40 hours over the year; 15–20 minutes a day with Skoolskill gives far more practice, all marked instantly, with weak topics automatically resurfaced. Many families use both — a tutor for confidence, Skoolskill for daily reps.

Will it help with the move to secondary school and the 11+?

Yes. The KS2 maths and English foundations overlap heavily with grammar-school entrance. If you're also considering the 11+, our dedicated 11+ page covers Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, which sit on top of the SATs content.
