What the 11+ actually is

The 11+ is the entrance exam for state grammar schools, sat in early Year 6 (usually September) for entry into Year 7. It’s selective: places go to the highest scorers, so it isn’t about passing a threshold — it’s about scoring above the other children sitting the same papers.

Most grammar schools now use GL Assessment. CEM, the other big provider, stopped supplying standard 11+ papers, so GL is the dominant format across England — used by over 80% of grammar schools, including Birmingham’s King Edward VI consortium, Kent, Buckinghamshire, the Wirral and many London schools.

The four papers

GL tests four areas, and strong candidates are even across all of them:

  • English — reading comprehension, plus spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Maths — the KS2 curriculum, but applied quickly and under time pressure
  • Verbal Reasoning — word logic: codes, analogies, sequences, odd-ones-out, letter patterns
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning — visual logic: rotations, reflections, matrices, shape sequences

Reasoning is the part most children have never seen at primary school, and it’s exactly where steady practice pays off most.

The method: short, daily, marked instantly

Reasoning is a trainable skill, and skills are built by repetition. Skoolskill’s AI 11+ tutor:

  • runs a short diagnostic across all four papers to find weak spots
  • sets 15–20 minutes of practice a day, mixing the four areas
  • marks every answer instantly with a worked explanation
  • automatically resurfaces the question types your child gets wrong
  • builds toward full timed papers as the test approaches

When a human 11+ tutor still helps

  • A child who freezes under exam pressure and needs reassurance
  • Building a personalised vocabulary and reading programme
  • Targeted support for a specific learning difficulty
  • Mock-test days in a formal, exam-like setting

Many families combine both: a tutor every week or two for strategy and confidence, Skoolskill daily for the actual reps.

Questions people ask

Which exam board does the 11+ use — GL or CEM?

Since CEM stopped providing standard 11+ papers (their final school exams ran out by 2023), GL Assessment is now the main provider, used by over 80% of grammar schools in England. GL tests English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. A few areas still use bespoke or CEM-style integrated papers, so Skoolskill drills all four skill areas to cover both formats.

Which areas and grammar schools does this suit?

Anywhere with grammar-school entrance: Birmingham (King Edward VI consortium, Sutton Coldfield), Kent and Medway, Buckinghamshire, Trafford and Greater Manchester, the Wirral, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, and the London consortiums (Tiffin, Wilson's, Henrietta Barnett and others). The AI adapts practice to the format your target schools use.

What exactly is tested?

GL covers four areas: English (comprehension, spelling, punctuation, grammar), Maths (the KS2 curriculum, applied at pace), Verbal Reasoning (word logic, codes, sequences, analogies) and Non-Verbal Reasoning (shapes, patterns, rotations, matrices). Speed and accuracy under timed conditions matter as much as the content.

When should my child start preparing?

Most children start in Year 5, around 9–12 months before the test, which falls in early Year 6 (usually September). Reasoning especially rewards a long, gentle run-up — short daily sessions beat last-minute cramming. Skoolskill builds a plan that counts backward from your test date.

How is this better than a weekly 11+ tutor?

Reasoning is a skill built by repetition. One hour a week with a £25–£50 tutor gives roughly 40 hours over a year; 15–20 minutes a day with Skoolskill gives far more practice, all marked instantly, with weak question types automatically resurfaced. Many families use both — a tutor for strategy, Skoolskill for daily reps.

Does it explain wrong answers?

Yes. Every question comes with a worked explanation, and the AI tracks which question types your child gets wrong — Non-Verbal rotations, for example, or comprehension inference — and brings more of those back until they're secure.

Is 20 minutes a day really enough for a 9 or 10-year-old?

It's ideal. Young children learn far better in short, consistent sessions than in long ones. Twenty focused minutes a day, six days a week, sustained over several months, builds both the skills and the exam stamina without burning your child out.
