The Leaving Cert rewards steady practice, not cramming
The students who land the H1s and the CAO points they need aren’t always the ones with the best teachers — they’re the ones who practised every day from September of sixth year. One hour of grinds a week at €40 an hour is no match for 20 minutes a day on exam-paper questions.
Skoolskill is built for that pattern. Your AI Leaving Cert tutor lives in your phone, reads your notes, knows your level in each subject, and quizzes you on the exact topics you’re weak on — every day, from your own room.
How the points and grades actually work
The Leaving Cert is graded in bands, and the CAO turns your best six results into points:
| Grade (Higher) | % range | CAO points | Ordinary equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | 90–100 | 100 | — |
| H2 | 80–89 | 88 | — |
| H3 | 70–79 | 77 | — |
| H4 | 60–69 | 66 | O1 = 56 |
| H5 | 50–59 | 56 | O2 = 46 |
| H6 | 40–49 | 46 | O3 = 37 |
| H7 | 30–39 | 37 | O4 = 28 |
| H8 | 0–29 | 0 | O5 = 20 |
Two things to remember: an O1 is worth the same 56 points as an H5, and Higher Maths carries 25 bonus points for any grade of H6 or above. The maximum possible is 625 — six H1s plus the maths bonus.
How the Leaving Cert plan works
| Stage | Focus |
|---|---|
| Fifth year | Build foundations, 15 min/day per subject, decide provisional levels |
| Sixth year Sep–Dec | Full syllabus, 20 min/day, topic-by-topic past-paper questions |
| Sixth year Jan–Feb | Mocks, confirm Higher vs Ordinary level by the deadline |
| Sixth year Mar–Apr | Whole past papers, timed, weakness drilling, oral prep |
| May | Full mock papers under exam conditions, error-log review |
| Last week | Light revision, sleep, no new content |
Done consistently, that’s well over a hundred hours of focused practice per subject by June — the difference between an H4 and an H2.
Past papers — where the points actually come from
Leaving Cert marks are built by doing past papers to the marking scheme, not by re-reading the book. Skoolskill has:
- Past exam papers and official SEC marking schemes, Higher and Ordinary, sorted by topic and year
- Topic tags on each question — drill the specific parts of the course you keep losing marks on
- Marking against the scheme’s wording, so you learn what the examiner is actually looking for
- Timed simulations that match real exam conditions
Common pitfalls — and how Skoolskill targets them
| Pitfall | The fix |
|---|---|
| Dropping Higher Maths too early | Daily drilling so an H6+ keeps the 25 bonus points |
| Studying by re-reading notes | Active recall and past-paper questions instead |
| Leaving the orals to April | Vocabulary and sraith pictiúr practice from January |
| Ignoring the marking scheme | Answers marked against the exact scheme wording |
| Spreading effort evenly | Weak-topic targeting so time goes where the marks are |
When a human grind still matters
- Oral exams for Irish, French, German and Spanish — live pronunciation feedback
- Severe exam anxiety — a person who can read when you’ve frozen
- Practical coursework and project sign-off — your teacher’s role
- Rebuilding a subject from a large gap — a patient human start
A common pattern: a private grind every couple of weeks for strategy and the orals, Skoolskill every day for the actual practice.
