The summer that decides the autumn
In Japan the school year runs April to March, so summer sits in the middle of it, not at the start. For most students the roughly 40-day 夏休み (summer break, about 21 July to 31 August) is a rest. For a 受験生 — an exam-year student — it is the opposite. It is the last long stretch of uninterrupted study before entrance exams, and once the second term (二学期) opens in September with its school events (行事) and its stacked new content, the free hours largely disappear.
That is why summer is called the 天王山 (tennōzan) of exams — the decisive battle that settles what comes after. A 中3 (Grade 9) is heading for high-school entrance exams (高校入試); a 高3 (Grade 12) is heading for university entrance, including the 共通テスト (the common test) in January. In both cases, what you repair in these 40 days is roughly what you carry into the autumn. Skoolskill’s job on this page is narrow and honest: turn that break into a plan that runs itself, built backwards from your real exam date, using your own notes and past papers.
中3 and 高3 have different summers
Both years start the same way — fundamentals first — but they diverge in what “past papers” means and how soon you get there.
| 中3 (high-school entrance) | 高3 (university entrance / 共通テスト) | |
|---|---|---|
| First half of summer | Close gaps from 中1–中2 across five subjects | Finish remaining syllabus, shore up weak units |
| Weakest subject | Give it the most daily minutes | Same — do not abandon one to polish another |
| Past-paper start | Late July into August, by topic | July, by topic, then whole timed sets |
| Late-summer target | Topic-sorted 過去問, some timed sections | 共通テスト format and pacing, timed papers |
| Realistic daily hours | ~6–8, in short blocks | ~8–10, in short blocks |
| Biggest risk | Coasting on strong subjects | Running out of time for format practice |
The common thread is order: fundamentals before format. A 高3 who jumps straight to 共通テスト mock papers without fixing the underlying units just learns, expensively, that the units are broken. A 中3 who only re-reads notes without drilling never finds out which topics actually leak marks. Do the boring repair first; the format work lands far better afterwards.
A backward-planned summer, week by week
Skoolskill counts back from your exam date and schedules spaced repetition automatically, so you don’t design or maintain the plan — you open the app and do today’s session. Applied to a summer that runs roughly late July to the end of August, and then onward to the exam, it looks like this.
| Phase | 中3 focus | 高3 focus |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 (late July) | Diagnose weak topics across 5 subjects | Finish outstanding syllabus units |
| Weeks 2–3 (early Aug) | Drill fundamentals, one weak topic at a time | Fundamentals + first topic-sorted 過去問 |
| Weeks 4–5 (mid–late Aug) | Topic-sorted 過去問, timed sections | 共通テスト format, timed sections by subject |
| 二学期 (Sept–Dec) | Keep weak topics on spaced review while term stacks | Whole timed papers, format under exam conditions |
| Autumn → exam | Full 過去問 mocks, then triage weakest topics | Whole 共通テスト mocks, then light targeted review |
| Final week | Light review of weak topics, then rest | Light review, sleep, arrive rested |
The engine underneath is ordinary spaced repetition: a topic you fix in the first week of August is re-tested a few days later, again mid-month, and again in September, so it is still there when the exam comes. That is the whole reason 15-minute daily sessions beat a single heroic all-nighter — the review keeps happening while you sleep, eat, and take a day off.
Scanning past papers to drill your own mistakes
The single most useful habit for a 受験生 is to stop doing whole papers blind and start attacking the specific questions you get wrong. Photograph a 過去問 or a 共通テスト practice question and Skoolskill reads it, lets you answer, and marks it — for maths and science on method and answer, for written (記述) answers against what the question was actually asking.
Every marked answer turns a wrong question into a specific lesson: not “you got this wrong” but “you knew the content and dropped marks because you didn’t show the working,” or “you described when the question asked you to explain.” Because those missed questions roll into spaced repetition, the exact question types where you leak marks come back over the following days until the habit is fixed. For a fuller picture of topic-sorted drilling and mark-scheme-style feedback, see past-paper practice; to see how the whole schedule is built backward from your exam, see the study planner.
Skoolskill next to a 夏期講習
The default summer plan for a Japanese 受験生 is a 夏期講習 — an intensive summer course at a 塾 (cram school) or 予備校 (prep school). It works, and it fixes your schedule for you. It is also expensive and rigid.
| 夏期講習 (塾 / 予備校) | Skoolskill | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost for the summer | Often ¥100,000+ | Free, or about ¥1,200 / $6.99 a month |
| Schedule | Fixed class times, commute | Your own hours, on your phone |
| Material | The course’s material | Your own notes and past papers |
| Marks your mistakes | In class, when the teacher gets to you | Instantly, every question |
| Live re-teaching | Yes — its real strength | No |
| Runs on a rest day | No | Yes — reviews still schedule |
The honest read: Skoolskill covers the daily drilling, marked practice, and past-paper format work cheaply and on your own clock, which is most of what a summer needs. It does not replace a live teacher for a subject you genuinely cannot follow. Plenty of families use both — a course or tutor for the one or two subjects that need re-teaching, and Skoolskill daily across everything else so nothing quietly rots.
When 15 minutes a day is not enough
Self-study has hard limits, and pretending otherwise wastes your summer.
- You can’t follow a topic even after re-reading and re-practising it — that needs re-teaching by a person, not more questions.
- Your target school or university sets nuanced 記述 (written) or essay answers where a teacher reads depth and voice better than any automatic marking.
- The exam includes an interview (面接) or spoken component that only real practice with a person prepares you for.
- Exam anxiety or timing panic shows up that no schedule fixes on its own.
For a 中3 or 高3, the smart move is rarely all-or-nothing. Use a 塾, 予備校, or tutor for the subjects and skills that need a human, and use Skoolskill for the consistent daily engine — the marked drilling and past-paper practice that a person can’t sit next to you and do 40 days running.
How to start your exam summer
- Create a free account — no credit card.
- Set your exam date: high-school entrance for 中3, or the 共通テスト and your university dates for 高3.
- Add your subjects, and be honest about which one you keep avoiding.
- Scan your notes and past papers so the plan drills your real material.
- Do the short daily session it serves you — fundamentals first, then past-paper format as summer ends.
- Let the reviews carry your weak topics through 二学期 to exam day.
