What GRE prep actually needs to do

The GRE General Test is a graduate-admissions exam scored on 130–170 for Verbal Reasoning, 130–170 for Quantitative Reasoning, and 0–6 for Analytical Writing. Since the 2023 redesign it runs about 1 hour 58 minutes — almost an hour shorter than before — with a single essay and no unscored experimental section. Because it is computer-adaptive between sections, your first Verbal and first Quant sections decide how hard (and how high-scoring) the second ones get.

Good GRE prep is therefore two things at once: building genuine skill in vocabulary, quantitative comparison and data interpretation, and getting comfortable with adaptive timing. That rewards daily practice far more than a weekend bootcamp. Skoolskill is an AI tutor that turns your own prep books and practice questions into daily 15–20 minute drills with feedback.

How the GRE prep plan works

PhaseFocusDaily target
Weeks 1–2Diagnostic; start vocabulary spaced repetition; review Quant fundamentals (arithmetic, ratios, exponents)15 min/day
Weeks 3–4Verbal: text completion, sentence equivalence, reading comprehension. Quant: algebra, quantitative comparison20 min/day
Weeks 5–6Data interpretation, geometry; one Analyze-an-Issue essay per week20 min/day
Final 2 weeksTimed adaptive sections; review every miss; error log25 min/day
Test weekLight vocabulary review, one timed run, then rest—

A test-taker who drills 20 minutes a day for six weeks logs roughly 14 hours of focused, spaced practice — more durable than the same hours crammed into a final week.

The three measures, broken down

  • Verbal Reasoning — text completion, sentence equivalence and reading comprehension. Vocabulary in context is the highest-leverage area for daily spaced repetition.
  • Quantitative Reasoning — arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data interpretation, with a heavy share of quantitative comparison questions. An on-screen calculator is provided, so the skill is setup and estimation, not raw computation.
  • Analytical Writing — a single Analyze an Issue essay scored 0–6. You build and defend a position with reasons and examples in 30 minutes.

Skoolskill drills each as its own topic, so your weakest measure gets the most reps. For the heavier data-analysis questions, our statistics tutor covers the underlying concepts.

When a prep course or human still matters

  • You are starting far below your target Quant score and need someone to teach concepts from scratch, not just drill them.
  • You want detailed human feedback on essay voice and argument nuance that automated scoring can’t fully capture.
  • You learn better with live accountability or a structured classroom rhythm.
  • Your program requires a subject GRE (e.g. Physics), which has different content than the General Test covered here.

Many test-takers combine a few human sessions or a course with daily AI drilling for the reps in between.

Questions people ask

What is on the GRE and how is it scored?

The GRE General Test has three measures: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, each scored 130–170 in 1-point steps, and Analytical Writing, scored 0–6 in half-point steps. The current shorter GRE runs about 1 hour 58 minutes with no scheduled break.

Is the GRE adaptive?

Yes, but section-adaptive, not question-by-question. Verbal and Quant each have two sections; your performance on the first section sets the difficulty of the second. Doing well early routes you into a harder, higher-scoring second section, so the opening section carries extra weight.

What sections does the GRE have now?

After the 2023 redesign there are five scored parts: one Analytical Writing 'Analyze an Issue' essay, two Verbal sections, and two Quant sections. The old 'Analyze an Argument' essay and the unscored experimental section were removed, which is why the test is now under two hours.

What's a good GRE score?

It depends on the program. A combined Verbal + Quant around 320 with a 4.0+ essay is competitive for many graduate programs; top STEM programs often expect Quant 165+, while humanities programs weight Verbal more. Always check the median scores your target departments publish.

How does Skoolskill help with GRE Verbal vocabulary?

Vocabulary in context is a classic spaced-repetition problem, which is exactly what Skoolskill is built for. You feed in your word lists or scan a prep book, and the AI resurfaces words you missed at widening intervals so they stick by test day instead of fading after a cram session.

Can AI grade my GRE Analytical Writing essay?

Skoolskill gives feedback against the writing criteria — clarity of position, development with reasons and examples, organization, and control of language. It is strong on structure and argument logic. A human reader still judges nuance and voice best, so pair AI drafts with a person before test day.

How long should I study for the GRE?

Most test-takers prepare for 6–12 weeks. Daily 15–20 minute sessions of mixed Verbal and Quant drilling, plus a weekly timed section, beats occasional long study blocks. Skoolskill counts back from your test date and adjusts the daily mix toward your weaker measure.
