What the ACT actually looks like
The ACT is a multiple-choice college admissions test built around four sections plus an optional essay. Its signature trait is speed: there are more questions per minute than the SAT, so pacing is half the battle. The core test runs about 2 hours and 5 minutes, and there’s no penalty for guessing — you answer every question, even if it’s a quick bubble at the buzzer.
The four sections:
- English: grammar, usage, punctuation, and rhetorical skills across passages
- Math: algebra, geometry, and some trigonometry (calculator allowed throughout)
- Reading: comprehension across prose, social science, humanities, and natural science passages
- Science: interpreting graphs, tables, experiments, and conflicting hypotheses — a reasoning section, not a facts test
With the enhanced ACT, Science is an optional section in some formats and the Writing essay is always optional. Check exactly what your chosen test date and target colleges require.
How the ACT is scored: 1 to 36
Each of the four sections is scored on a 1–36 scale. Your Composite is the simple average of those four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number — also 1–36. A 36 is perfect.
Because the composite is an average, one strong section can pull up a weaker one: a great English score helps offset a rough Math section. That’s different from the SAT, where Math is a full 50% of your total. On the ACT, each section is only 25% of the composite, which rewards balanced performers.
SAT vs ACT: the quick comparison
| Digital SAT | ACT | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Fully digital, section-adaptive | Multiple choice, four sections |
| Sections | Reading & Writing, Math | English, Math, Reading, Science |
| Scoring | 400–1600 (sum of two) | 1–36 (average of four) |
| Length | ~2 hr 14 min | ~2 hr 5 min |
| Pace | More time per question | Faster, more questions/minute |
| Science section | No | Yes (optional in some formats) |
| Guessing penalty | None | None |
Every accredited four-year college in the US accepts both tests equally — no school prefers one. Pick the one you score better on. Our SAT prep page covers the digital test in depth.
How daily ACT prep compounds
A good plan, starting about 3–4 months out:
Months 3–4 out (15 min/day, 5 days/week)
- Take a diagnostic; find your weakest of the four sections
- Drill fundamentals: grammar rules, core algebra and geometry, reading strategies
- Learn the Science section’s question types — it’s reasoning, not memorization
Months 2–1 out (20–25 min/day)
- Mixed practice across all four sections
- Start timed sections — ACT pacing is its own skill
- Track recurring wrong-answer patterns
Final 3 weeks
- Full-length timed practice tests under real conditions
- Review every miss; keep an error log
- Light review the last few days, then sleep
Skoolskill’s planner does this automatically once you set your test date, adjusting daily prompts as the ACT approaches.
Common ACT mistakes — and the fix
| Pitfall | What happens | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Running out of time | Whole questions left blank | Drill timed sections; learn to skip and return |
| Leaving answers blank | No guessing penalty wasted | Bubble a guess on everything |
| Treating Science as facts | Overthinking, wasted time | Practice reading graphs and data fast |
| Cramming the last week | No real gain; burnout | Start 3+ months out, 15 min/day |
| Ignoring your weakest section | One score drags the average | Give your worst section the most reps |
Section by section
English is grammar and rhetoric in context — fix sentences, choose the clearest phrasing, manage punctuation. Math spans algebra, geometry, and light trig, with a calculator allowed throughout. Reading is four passages under tight time, so a strategy for skimming and locating evidence matters. Science gives you data sets and experiments to interpret quickly — the content is provided; you’re being tested on reasoning and speed.
Skoolskill drills each section as its own track, so the one holding your composite back gets the most practice.
